Job Title:  Elementary Literacy Coach

Reports to: Director of Elementary Programs

 

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Program

  1. Create and support the development of a literacy environment conducive to effective instruction and aligned best practices across the district
  2. Facilitate instruction based on current reading/study/thinking research throughout the total instructional program
  3. Support the development and implementation of a plan to improve tier-one instruction across RISD classrooms
  4. Demonstrate (model) reading/learning strategies within district campuses
  5. Evaluate literacy needs within various subject areas and collaborate with teachers and administrators to interpret, use assessment data to improve instruction, and problem solve
  6. Use assessment data to assist administrators with placement of students in appropriate instructional, enrichment, or intervention programs
  7. Support faculty in the selection and use of a range of assessment tools as a means to make sound decisions about student literacy needs as related to the curriculum and to instruction
  8. Participate regularly in PLC meetings with classroom teachers and monitor progress in order to support teacher reflection and action
  9. Assist classroom teachers with analysis of formal and informal assessment data on their students to determine student response to instruction
  10. Assist the district curriculum personnel in planning for and implementing the accountability goals associated with the School Improvement Plan
  11. Work with the school’s Leadership Team, Literacy Team, and other constituent groups to determine the school’s strengths and needs for improvement in the area of literacy in order to improve students’ reading, writing, and communication skills and content area achievement
  12. Assist teachers with planning, sequencing, scaffolding of instruction, and differentiated instructional support based on students’ level of mastery
  13. Participate in team reviews concerning academic progress of at-risk students who are not responding to interventions
  14. Work with feeder pattern staff to assure articulation from elementary to middle and from middle to high school
  15. Assist teachers in reflective teaching practices and responding to the 4 questions guiding PLCs
  16. Support the vision of the district and district initiatives

Professional Development

  1. Provide PD training and follow-up coaching to assist classroom teachers in the use of literacy strategies
  2. Work with teachers individually, in collaborative teams, and/or with departments, providing practical support on a full range of literacy strategies
  3. Observe and provide feedback to teachers on instruction related to literacy development and content area knowledge
  4. Participate in district-level PD meetings and assisting in the coordination of district level PD offerings
  5. Continue professional growth and strengthen professional teaching knowledge, skills, and strategies through an ongoing program of workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work
  6. Provide literacy aligned staff development for teachers, volunteers, parents, paraprofessionals, administrators, and other appropriate personnel as needed

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

N/A

 

Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree or higher
  2. Current NM certified Teacher License
  3. Level II or above
  4. Must have at least five (5) years teaching experience
  5. Valid Driver’s license and Car Insurance (if traveling from site to site)

 

Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 40 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.

Safety and Health:

Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.)

Equipment/Material Handled:

Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, multi-media equipment

Work environment:

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. My work under stressful conditions on occasion.
