Job Title: PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL NURSE
Reports To: BUILDING PRINCIPAL AND NURSE SUPERVISOR
General Job Description:
Providing direct health services to students and consultation services to staff. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students and staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement state mandates including immunizations, health screenings (vision and hearing), etc. and follow-ups.
- Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on each student including the Emergency Medication Authorization Form and Student Health History.
- Monitors student immunization compliance, notifies parents of discrepancies, and coordinates with principals and if needed with the Nursing Supervisor for appropriate actions to comply with state and district mandated immunization compliance policies.
- Administers immunizations to students as needed.
- Maintaining confidentiality when needed.
- Uses School Health Manual for required forms and needed information.
- Keeps accurate records, health office logs, medication student logs, and other logs required.
- Manages the school health office while exercising supervision and care over furniture, books, supplies and equipment entrusted to her/his care to the health program.
- Notifies parents of student’s illnesses and potential health problems and makes appropriate referrals.
- Makes up and distributes first aid kits to all staff in their buildings.
- Develop a nursing diagnosis and implement student health management plans while coordinating with other providers and school personnel and revise accordingly.
- Attend Individual Educational Plan (IEP), required in-service training activities and any other meeting called by the principal or the nursing supervisor.
- Performs screening assessments on all students referred to special education.
- Serves, as requested, on school and district-wide committees and project teams.
- Meet the health needs of students including giving medications as per doctor’s order or by written parent permission and following district policy.
- Interprets to school personnel, parents, and student’s results of examinations and screening tests.
- Communicates with principals and teachers regarding health conditions, which might require special consideration or arrangements for the student while in class.
- Prepare and submit reports (regular and state mandated) as required.
- Renders first aid and emergency measures to students and staff.
- Provide appropriate health counseling to students, and/or staff.
- Provide nursing and/or medically prescribed interventions.
- Provide appropriate referral services using community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs.
- Carrying out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of blood borne pathogens exposure and hazardous medical waste disposal.
- Participating as a team member, when appropriate and with parental consent shares information with other team members.
- Acting as an advocate for students and families.
- Prepares and delivers appropriate health education, growth and development programs, dental, head lice programs, etc.
- Reports suspected child abuse and neglect to social services authorities.
- Demonstrating current knowledge of school nursing.
- Assuming responsibility for continuing education and professional growth, attending committee meetings.
- Identify need for health education to students and/or school personnel.
- Relate to children.
- Ability to operate various diagnostic equipment.
- Participate in planning of health in-service for school personnel in their buildings.
- Acting as a resource for health education programs and classes.
- Inventories and maintains required medical supplies and equipment.
- Working with community and acts as advocate in promoting the health of the student population.
- Administers district exposure control plan for blood-borne pathogens as per district policy.

- Public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social services agencies.
- Federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
- Community resources and technology, i.e. word processing, data base management, and spreadsheet.

- Work with a wide variety of individuals in a highly stressful environment.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.
- Be flexible and able to prioritize tasks and maintain accurate and detailed records.
- Communicate in well-organized oral and written forms.
- Be able to maintain a neat, functional office that is inviting but professional, safe environment.
- Report to work on time and work no less than 7.25 hours per day.
- Work independently with very little supervision.
- Maintain mental capacity which allows the ability to make sound decisions and demonstrate intellectual capabilities.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the principal, supervisor and/or Superintendent.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The school nurse shall be responsible for the supervision of all clinic volunteers and any other person who may be assigned to aid in the health services program.
Qualifications:
- New Mexico School Nurse Licensure by the Public Education Department.
- Current R.N. Licensure by the State Board of Nursing.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Associate.
- CPR Certified.
- Valid Driver’s license and Insurance.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required.
Safety and Health:
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, all multi-media equipment including current technology.
Work Environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine.
Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site visits when needed and appropriate. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
