Job Description
Job Title: Family Engagement and Behavior Support Specialist – Early Preschool
Reports To: PRINCIPAL
General Job Description:
Collaborates with Staff and Families to plan and implement programs and strategies that provide behavioral supports for preschool students across settings including home and school.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate appropriate skills in working with parents and families.
- Promote student success through support of parents and families.
- Provide crisis intervention services as necessary.
- Serve as a consultant on IEP teams.
- Consult and collaborate with building administrators, and school based professionals to interpret student social/emotional needs, assist with behavioral management, serve as a resource for school staff, including involvement in staff meetings, professional development, trainings, etc.
- In collaboration with appropriate RISD departments, provides coaching, support, and professional development to school-based administrators and staff to promote research-based family engagement strategies, with emphasis on early childhood and behavior.
- Assists in the development and implementation of family engagement programs, initiatives, and activities in collaboration with appropriate RISD departments.
- Assists in the dissemination of information on the district’s strategic plan, key initiatives, other relevant information about RISD’s programs/services, and community resources to families.
- Uses a variety of multimedia and social media platforms to inform internal and external audiences about family engagement and behavioral support efforts.
- Knowledge and understanding of New Mexico Early Learning Indicator, FOCUS, Home/Family Visiting Guidelines, Full Inclusion, and Socio Emotional Development of Young Children.
- Knowledge of community partner agencies and ability to communicate effectively with partner agencies.
- Conduct scheduled Family Visits under the Home/Family Visiting Guidelines.
- Maintain an active line of communication to keep teachers abreast of special needs or problems of individual students.
- Assist with special events during and after school hours for children and parents.
- Keep parents informed of program opportunities and services available at the school or within the community to support student academic and social learning.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with community service providers, use community services to assess and provide for the needs of students and families.
- Knowledge of RISD Child Find Process.
- Collect data and write reports for grant purposes
- Work with families of children with and without disabilities and in foster care or homeless.
- Maintain confidentiality with sensitive matters.
- Work independently with very little supervision.
- May be required to perform other related duties/functions as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications in the form of experience, knowledge, skills and attitude:
- Master’s Degree in Education, Social Work, or Related Field; Bilingual preferred.
- Early childhood or special education experience preferred.
- Have knowledge and evidence-based practices relevant to behavioral interventions and differentiated instructional methodology.
- Experience working with parents, children and youth who are facing difficult circumstances
- Familiarity with community resources
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Valid Driver’s License and Car Insurance
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds), climbing stairs, reaching, squatting, kneeling, having full mobility of fingers/hands, and moving light furniture may be required, unless ADA accommodations have been mutually agreed on and does not create an undue hardship upon the district.
Safety and Health:
Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (blood borne pathogens, body fluids, etc.)
Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, multi-media equipment including current technology as needed.
Work Environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise and temperature. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed. May work under stressful conditions on occasion.
Employment in this position is contingent upon continued grant funding and the position will conclude upon the expiration of the grant. Renewal or extension of the position is subject to the availability of future funding. |
